HERO at Rockefeller Center

(01 — 04)

15 months of technical direction for HERO at Rockefeller Center: a Dolby Atmos spatial audio upgrade with dance stacks and a rebuilt video system.

HERO is an immersive sound and light venue on the Rink Level of Rockefeller Center. Low Res served as its technical direction consultant for 15 months, across audio, lighting and video.

The brief. Make the main room hit harder without tearing it out — and make the systems behind the experience run the same way every day.

The sound. Low Res upgraded the main room to Dolby Atmos using Dante and Symetrix, built on the existing infrastructure. Unusually for spatial audio, full dance stacks are part of the Atmos system — so the room hits with the weight of a club while sound moves all around you. Exciting, powerful, and powered entirely by Bose.

The video. The 1.5mm-pitch LED video walls were maintained, then upgraded, simplified and refined. Networking issues and video processor problems were tracked down and fixed.

The result. A smooth-running, consistent video system and a main room that sounds as big as it looks — in a venue open to the public every day.
